Castillo de San Felipe











Situación
El castillo de San Felipe se encuentra en la provincia de La Coruña, comarca de El Ferrol, municipio de Ferrol, parroquia de Brión, a 58 kilómetros de La Coruña. El castillo se encuentra en unas magnificas condiciones naturales, bordeando la ría y guardándola, frente con frente, con el castillo de Palma.

Para llegar a él hay cruzar el puente de las Pías y dirigirse al puerto, para bordear la Malata y llegar a la Graña, donde hay un desvío a la derecha que lleva al castillo.

Historia
Los orígenes de la fortificación de San Felipe se remontan al siglo XVI (año 1577), en plena lucha por la hegemonía marítima de los piases europeos. Ferrol, como punto estratégico para el reaprovisionamiento de los buques de la Armada Real, necesitaba un sistema defensivo eficaz frente a las pretensiones de los almirantes ingleses y franceses. Así en el año 1589 se comienza la construcción del baluarte auspiciada por Felipe II, de aquí su nombre.

En esta misma época se construyeron también otros dos castillos en la orilla opuesta, el de Nuestra Señora de la Palma y el de San Martín. Entre este último y el de San Felipe se tendía una cadena que impedía la entrada a los navíos enemigos. Las tres fortificaciones dieron muestra de su eficacia en 1639 durante el ataque francés al mando del Almirante Henri D'Escobleau y el 26 de agosto de 1800 durante el ataque ingles del General Pultney, hito recordado todos los años por los habitantes de Brión. Entre los año 1731 y 1775 sufrió importantes reformas que le dieron su configuración actual.

Descripción
La estructura de esta fortaleza esta perfectamente diseñada para proteger la entrada por la Ría, en combinación con los otros dos castillos (Palma y San Martín), y para defenderse de posibles ataques por tierra. Su forma viene dada, tanto por el canal de entrada maritimo, como por la orografía del terreno y en ella podemos apreciar una geometria bastante regular, con el hornaveque como elemento central.

Una vez cruzado el foso que rodea al castillo se accede al mismo por la puerta principal, en la que pueden apreciarse los espacios ocupados por los mecanismos del puente levadizo. A continuación se encuentra el Cuerpo de Guardia, y posteriormente otra puerta que da a una plaza con cuatro accesos.

En frente de la plaza se encuentra la zona más antigua y las baterias. En este punto pueden verse las baterias de levante, a flor de agua, la bateria del Castelo Vello, las baterias de poniente, muy reformadas en el siglo XIX y otros edificios de apoyo y almacenamiento de municiones. En esta zona hay un enorme conjunto de construcciones que mezclan distintos momentos constructivos y la evolución de la artillería. Hay emplazamientos al aire libre, emplazamientos cerrados, y grandes locales destinados al almacenamiento de municiones.

Desde la pequeña plaza de los cuatro accesos, se accede también al hornaveque. Su puerta de acceso está presidida por lo que fuera el escudo real. Después de atravesar el pasadizo, se llega a la plaza central que cubre un aljibe, y al que se accede desde un pozo situado en el centro. Esta plaza está presidida por el edificio de los mandos y la capilla. Enfrente de este edificio hay un corredor porticado y varios recintos muy deteriorados. En la zona de poniente se encuentran las caballerizas, y por detrás del edificio los alojamientos de la tropa, desde donde puede subirse a la parte alta del hornaveque, desde el que se puede disfrutar de unas fantasticas vistas de la Ría y del castillo.

Visitas
Puede visitarse previo pago de la entrada correspondiente. Una vez dentro del castillo, es en el Cuerpo de Guardia donde se paga la entrada , que se acompaña de guía informativa.

Situation
The Castle of San Felipe is located in the province of La Coruña, region of El Ferrol, a town of Ferrol, Brion parish, 58 kilometers from La Coruña. The castle is in a magnificent natural conditions along the river and keeping it, forehead to forehead, with the castle of Palma.

Description

In front of the plaza is the oldest and the batteries. At this point the batteries can be raised, at the water, battery of Castelo Vello, the batteries of the west, very reformed in the nineteenth century and other support buildings and storage of ammunition. In this area there is a huge complex of buildings that blend different times constructive and evolution of the artillery. There are outdoor sites, closed sites, and large premises for the storage of ammunition.

From the small square of the four entrances, access is also hornaveque. Your gateway is dominated by what was once the royal shield. After passing through the passageway, you arrive at the central square that covers a cistern, and accessed from a well located in the center. This square is dominated by the building of management and the chapel. Opposite this building is an arcade racer and several badly damaged enclosures. In the area west are the stables, and behind the building, the troops' accommodation, where you can climb to the top of hornaveque, from which you can enjoy fantastic views of the estuary and castle.
